During the first round of semifinal two rodeo officials determined that conditions for the women’s barrel race were unfavorable, so they stopped the competition giving the contestants the option to rerun the following morning, Feb. 20. Jill Wilson of Snyder, Texas, was one of those competitors and she took advantage to stop the clock in 13.82 seconds to win the round and added $5,000 to her San Antonio earnings. Pedone was right on her heels stopping the clock in 13.86 seconds to finish second and add $4,000. Pedone had a clean sweep in her bracket so was coming into the semifinals with the largest sum of money with $7,500.

The second round of semifinal 2 was on Thursday evening, Feb. 20, and two-time world champion Brittany Pozzi Tonozzi continued to ride her wave of momentum after winning the San Angelo Rodeo last weekend. Pozzi Tonozzi stopped the clock in 13.91 seconds to add another $5,000 to her earnings. She enters the finals with $10,000, just behind Pedone.

The first semifinal group kicked things off this week with Wrangler NFR qualifier Kathy Grimes taking the victory lap on Monday with a time of 14.05 seconds. She was followed closely by the last two WPRA Rookies of the Year with Jimmie Smith second in a time of 14.11 and Carly Taylor third with a 14.15-second run. The second round of the first semifinal saw Canadian Brooke Wills take the victory lap in the Lone Star State with a 13.94-second run. Grimes, Brittney Barnett and Taylor were the top winners out of semifinal one with $8,500 each in earnings thus far in San Antonio.

A new element for the 2020 edition is the Wildcard round that will take place on Friday, Feb. 21 that will feature the top 10 times on two runs from a qualifier that was held Feb 10 and 11. Some of the names slated to compete in the Wildcard round include Brittany Diaz, Kelly Bruner, and Tiany Schuster. The single fastest time in the Wildcard round will be the 11th contestant in the San Antonio Rodeo Finals.

During the first round of bracket 3, NFR qualifier and veterinarian Kathy Grimes took the early lead in a time of 14.00 seconds to pocket $2,500. Grimes did so aboard her great mount known as Issy.

“So fun to win on Issy again,” posted Grimes on Facebook following her round win. “She loves the San Antonio rodeo and we were fortunate enough to get the win tonight.”

The following night Brittney Barnett, who is currently residing in Stephenville, Texas, but a former RAM NCFR qualifier for California took the victory lap after stopping the clock in a time of 13.91 seconds. Her time was just one-one hundredth off the fastest time turned in thus far in San Antonio. Emily Miller turned in a 13.90-second run during the final round of Bracket 1 competition. Barnett called upon the services of her paint mare, Chicks Keen O Pocopoo, who she simply calls Paint.

Dona Kay Rule, who qualified for her first Wrangler NFR last year, brought the heat in the third round winning the round in a time of 13.98 seconds. She did so with the help of the 2019 Horse of the Year winner High Valor.

The top four in total money won during each bracket advances to the semifinals. Barnett led the way with $4,500 in Bracket 3, with Rule and Grimes advancing with $3,750 and $3,500 in earnings, respectively. Cindy Smith of Lovington, N.M. grabbed the final qualifying spot with a second and fourth place finish during the three rounds of competition.

Bracket 4 will begin on Friday night at 7 p.m. in the AT&T Center.

NFRPedone Shoots to Early Lead in San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO (Feb. 9, 2020)—It was Sunday fun day at the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo for one contestant in particular.

Barrel racer Ryann Pedone from Sunset, Texas, qualified to compete at San Antonio for the first time in 2020. She did that in part because of a seven-year-old stallion named Feel the Sting “Stinger.”

Stinger is owned by High Point Performance Horses of Pilot Point, Texas. Pedone has been riding him as well as Dash Ta Jones “Jonesy” during the 2019 season with one goal in mind – win enough to qualify for the big winter rodeos. They finished 40th in the WPRA World Standings last year and this year, they are competing at rodeos they have never been to before.

While they have never competed at the rodeo here before, both Pedone and Stinger are veterans and handled the crowd and atmosphere in the AT&T Center like they had been competing there all of their lives. They won the first round of Bracket 2 Saturday evening with a 14.22-second run. Sunday’s matinee saw a tick come off of their time and they won again with 14.21. Sunday evening’s performance was their best run to date stopping the clock in a quick 13.98 seconds. They had a clean sweep of the bracket and are headed back to Sunset knowing they have a spot in the Semifinals secured with $7,500 in earnings.

And, because contestants advance through the divisions here based on money won, Pedone is in great shape to qualify for the Championship Finals on Feb. 22. They will have two more opportunities to add to their earnings during the Semifinals. Prior to San Antonio’s rodeo, Pedone was 22nd in the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association world standings. She will need to stay there through September to qualify for her first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo where world champions are crowned. With over $1.2 million in prize money, San Antonio’s rodeo is an important stepping stone for many contestants who accomplish that goal.

Taylor Langdon of Aubrey, Texas, kicked things off in San Antonio in Bracket 1 competition winning the first round in a time of 14.03 seconds. The rounds would only get faster with Tillar Murray of Fort Worth, Texas, winning the second round in 13.91 seconds but it was 2019 Wrangler NFR qualifier and registered dental hygienist Emily Miller aboard Chongo that turned in the fastest time in the third round with a 13.90-second run. When all the earnings were tabulated it was Murray leading the way in bracket 1 with $5,000, followed by Miller and Langdon with $4,500 each and Hallie Hanssen with $2,000.

Bracket 3 will begin on Monday night at 7 p.m. in the AT&T Center.
