While pigs aren’t flying yet, the barrel horses in the WPRA sure are, setting arena records from state to state.
A week ago, two-time and reigning world champion Hailey Kinsel set a new arena record in Dodge City, Kansas, that was also the fastest recorded time on a standard pattern at a PRCA/WPRA Rodeo. Kinsel and DM Sissy Hayday “Sister” then took their talents to the Lawton (Oklahoma) Rangers Rodeo and set a new arena record there en route to the title. The duo stopped the clock in 16.90 seconds to pocket $4,951, finishing just ahead of Tiany Schuster with a 16.92.
“Sis has been pretty incredible lately and I’m blessed to be on her back for it,” wrote Kinsel on Facebook. “A fun win and arena record in Lawton, Oklahoma.”
The previous record in Lawton was held by Lisa Lockhart set in 2017 and was a 16.93-second run.
Then on the final night of the Sikeston (Missouri) Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo on Saturday night, August 8 things got smoking hot. Last year, Jessica Routier set a new record stopping the clock in 16.02 seconds. Kinsel on Friday, August 7 made a good run at that record stopping the clock in 16.09 seconds to move to the top of the leaderboard. During the final performance of the rodeo, Cheyenne Wimberley flew through the cloverleaf pattern to the tune of a new record time of 15.99 seconds but it would be short lived as top futurity trainer Ryann Pedone aboard a new mount turned in a statement run of 15.91 seconds to etch her name in the record books in Sikeston.
Pedone was aboard a fairly new mount to her, French Zone, that was purchased from NFR qualifier Kelly Bruner, who raised and trained the mare. The 7-year old mare Hollywood was sired by Frenchmans Guy out of Star Zone and in July of 2020 High Point Performance Horses purchased this outstanding mare and Pedone and Hollywood put it all together in Sikeston on Saturday night.
“I am deeply thankful and blessed... for the special, unique, amazing people in my life who support me, uplift me, comfort me and bring joy to my soul as they share a piece of their own in the precise magical moment it needed to happen. My being truly loves yours,” wrote Pedone on her Facebook page after the record breaking victory. “This quote says it all! I am at loss of words tonight, and I just have to say thank you to my entire Team! It was a long week last week, however this week closed out well! I was able to acquire my first win on a mare that a lady I respect, Kelly Bruner, raised and trained!
“I owe so much thanks to Jack and Kelly [Bruner] for all their help and encouragement, because it has been a little bumpy trying to get with a mare that is trained a little different than I ride... so I had to really adjust and change my riding. Thank you Jason [Martin], Charlie Cole, and Dan Houck II for your patience while I struggled to get my timing with this special equine athlete! This win was so special because Don Lee was able to be on a horse we raised to help walk Hollywood in the alley! She really went above and beyond for me tonight and I hope I made Kelly proud because she did an amazing job getting this mare to where she is! Thank you!”
With the win Pedone added $4,533 to her standings and is currently ranked 16th, just $2,579 out of the 15th hole that is currently held by Schuster. Upon completion of the weekend Kinsel jumped to No. 2 in the world with $67,467 while Brittany Pozzi Tonozzi still holds the top spot with $79,892 on the season. Wimberley currently sits eighth with $41,024.
