WPRA
barrel racer Tana Poppino is one of five women featured
in an article in the February issue of More magazine
describing how each made dramatic, successful and often
emotional career changes during their lives. The article,
titled "They Said I Was Crazy" hit newsstands
in late January. MORE's is the only lifestyle magazine
for women over 40 and reaches 1.3 million women with
each issue.
Poppino's segment of the story,
which also includes a photo of her running barrels on
her horse Goose, documents her career shift from a corporate
marketing executive for an energy company with salary
and benefits to becoming a full time professional rodeo
athlete faced with extensive travel away from her family
and an uncertain income.
In the article, Poppino describes
the first years as a barrel racer when her funds were
running low and she was considering returning to work.
Then her fortunes turned and she began winning. She
qualified for the 2006 and 2007 Wrangler National Finals.
Then came a huge set back. During the 2007 NFR, her
horse Amigo was injured requiring surgery and a year
off from competition. Poppino found another partner
in Goose, a young grey horse that she is teaching the
pro rodeo ropes. In 2009, Poppino suffered a broken
ankle at the Reno Rodeo and after trying to continue
to compete took time off to let it heal.
This season she is back on the rodeo
circuit with both Amigo and Goose. She was recently
elected as WPRA Circuit Director for the Prairie Circuit.
The article also profiles the career
changes of Kathy Stevens who runs an animal sanctuary,
Angela Logan who owns a highly successful food company,
Amelia Moran Ceja who owns a shipyard and Laurie Sue
Brockway who is currently a minister.
