Alert-High Winds

  5/6/2024 – The WPRA Office is currently experiencing a power outage due to high winds. If needed, please feel free to contact the office via email and we will respond when power is restored.

Alert-Delayed Opening

  3/15/2024 – Due to inclement weather, the WPRA Office will open at 10:00am MT today.

Alert-Phone and Internet Down

  3/1/2024 – The phone system and internet are experiencing an outage at the WPRA office. Technicians are working hard to restore service and we will update the status as soon as possible.

President’s Day 2024

  2/17/2024-The WPRA office will be closed Monday, February 19, 2024 for President’s Day. Because of this holiday, payouts this week will also be delayed.

Alert-Procom and Online Entry System Outage

  7/24/2023-The PRCA is still recovering from a network outage and due to this Procom online entries are NOT available yet. Procom will now be taking entries by phone for just the most pressing rodeos at this time and these rodeos will be communicated to WPRA members through email. These are temporary procedures, until further notice. Procom will use rodeosetup.com to communicate how each rodeo will be set up and other pressing information. Obviously, the volume to the Procom phone line is expected to be high, so please be patient, plan to call well in advance of deadlines, and please only call with pressing turnouts, releases, and entries for the emailed rodeos.

Alert-Procom and Online Entry System Outage

  7/20/2023-Important Alert

  1. The PRCA has informed us that their network has been impacted by a virus. Unfortunately, the PRCA system that includes the Procom entry system, will be down for a period of time while they mitigate and isolate the issue. In the meantime, members will be able to call Procom and PRCA member services. Procom will be taking turnouts & releases by phone. Obviously, the volume to that line is expected to be high, so please be patient and plan to call well in advance of deadlines. All entry and trade deadlines for Thursday, July 20th will be extended until further notice.  We will keep you informed as the PRCA works hard on resolving this issue.
  2. The WPRA Office will be closing at 4:30pm MT on Thursday, July 20th due to inclement weather.

Results from the election process have been tallied by the WPRA’s 3rd party election vendor. The election results are as follows:

The WPRA Board is sharing some important information and key dates. Please note that this document is a summary and does not replace the 2023 WPRA Rulebook.

1. What is the timeline for the 2023 nomination and election cycle?

On or prior to the first business day of January – The WPRA Office must receive a signed membership application and payment from adult card members by this date to receive a nomination ballot – Please reference rule 3.1.1. in the 2023 WPRA Rule Book.

On or about January 12, 2023 – Nomination ballots sent to eligible WPRA members electronically – Please reference rule 3.1.1. in the 2023 WPRA Rule Book.

  • Hard copies mailed no later than January 16.

Monday, January 30, 2023, by 5pm MT– Nomination ballots (paper and electronic) due back to the election vendor – Please reference rule 3.1.1. in the 2023 WPRA Rule Book.

Wednesday, February 1, 2023, by end of day – Nomination ballots certified by the election vendor. Nominated candidates are contacted the following business day – Please reference rules 3.2.1 and 3.2.2. in the 2023 WPRA Rule Book.

2. What positions are up for nomination/election in 2023?

Badlands, Great Lakes, Prairie, California and Turquoise circuit director positions and two (2) national roping director positions.

3. Who will receive ballots during this nomination and election cycle?

Adult cardholders, who have returned to the WPRA office their 2023 signed and paid membership application on or before the 1st business day of January 2023 (for nominations and February 1, 2023 for an election ballot) and who have a voting designation in a circuit/division up for election in 2023 on their application. If the voting designation is invalid or left blank on the application, it defaults to circuit designation or card type.

4. How will I receive my ballot?
Eligible voting members will receive a digital ballot sent to the email address on file with the WPRA.

5. What if I don’t receive a ballot?
  1. Be sure to check your spam/junk folders.
  2. Check with the WPRA office to confirm your eligibility, voting designation, email address and or mailing address.
  3. Request a digital ballot re-send through the WPRA office.
6. What is my ballot number?

Each eligible voting member is assigned unique credentials to access their digital ballot; these credentials are also present on your paper ballot. These credentials are your voter identifier/ballot number.

7. How do I know if my ballot was submitted?

Once your electronic ballot has been submitted, you will be directed to a confirmation screen with the option to input your email to receive an email confirmation. There will be no confirmation for physical ballots. Any nomination ballots sent to the WPRA office will be destroyed.

8. What if I submit both a digital and paper ballot?

If a member submits both an electronic and printed ballot, only the electronic ballot will be counted.

9. Why is the WPRA offering both a paper (for 2023 only) and an online option for casting nomination and election votes?

The WPRA Board has elected to go this direction in 2023 only for two (2) reasons:

To Offer Faster Delivery/Response Options: Historically the WPRA has relied on a paper process totally dependent on the US mail system for delivery. Experience has shown that US mail delivery has gotten increasingly slower and is not always reliable. In addition, as the world adapts to online services in their everyday life, they are looking for those same options from the WPRA.

To increase Eligible Member Voting Participation:  Eligible member voting participation rates have been historically very, very low. This is because the paper system is slow and increasingly lacks mail delivery reliability, members often read the materials and forget to respond, or they are on the road and can’t get mail delivery. Online voting is popular and should increase member participation and having their voices heard.

10. Are there text or fax options for me to submit my ballot?

Voting members may only submit their ballot by filling out the digital ballot or by mailing their ballot using the pre-addressed envelope provided with their paper ballot.

11. Are my votes confidential?

Yes, only the outside 3rd party election vendor sees and records votes.

12. What if I forget to vote?

The 3rd party election vendor will send out an email reminder to eligible members that have not submitted a ballot.

13. When does the new board take over?

The newly elected Board will take office either 20 days following the certification of the election or at the first full Board meeting, whichever is sooner.

14. I have a voting designation that is not up for election in 2023, why can’t I participate?

Members can only vote for their designated circuit director or roping director. Please reference rule 4.1.3.1., 4.1.3.2. and 3.4.6. in the 2023 WPRA rule book.

15. What are the criteria for running for circuit director?

Any card member nominated for office, in order to be eligible, must have been a WPRA card member for 2 out of the last 3 years prior to the year you wish to run, must not have been found guilty of a major rule violation, and must not be eligible to run for roping director (see below).

Roping Nomination and Election Specific Questions:
16. What are the criteria for running as a national roping director?
  • Must have competed at 10 or more pro rodeos in the breakaway in 2022 and must have had any card for 2 of the last 3 years prior to the year you wish to run, OR
  • Roping division card holder or pro rodeo breakaway card holder for the past 5 consecutive years prior to the year you wish to run, OR
  • Gold card holder who designated roping for the past 5 consecutive years prior to the year you wish to run, OR
  • Lifetime member who designated roping for the past 5 consecutive years prior to the year you wish to run  

Also, must not have been found guilty of a major rule violation.

17. Why will there be two (2) national roping directors starting at the end of March 2023?

The sport of breakaway is growing rapidly and as a result, WPRA approvals and roping memberships are growing as well. An additional national roping director position is being added to offer more representation for the roping membership and to share the ever-increasing task load that comes with being a director.

18. How will the terms work for the two (2) national roping directors?

The nation roping director candidate with the most votes will be the R1 director and will serve until the 2026 election cycle. The national roping director candidate with the second most votes will serve as the R2 director and will serve until the next election cycle in 2025. Please reference rule 4.1.3.2. in the 2023 WPRA rule book.

19. What are the roles and responsibilities of the national roping directors?

Highlights per rule # 4.2 (read for other details) all directors are responsible to see that the rules of the WPRA are carried out, appoint spokeswomen to aid and assist in rodeo administration, attend all Board meetings (whether in person or telephonically), attend as many general membership meetings as possible, and create and empower committees as necessary. Few of the other main responsibilities not listed in rule 4.2. are answer member questions, contact and work with rodeo committees, stock contractor (if necessary) and DC producers on event details.

20. As a roper, if I have questions about roping or WPRA matters, who will answer those questions?

Once the two (2) national roping directors are elected they will work with the Board to determine how they will equitably handle membership and all rodeo/DC administration.  Once a plan of action is agreed upon by the roping directors and approved by the Board, a communication will be sent out the membership with those details.

21. Why can those who designated “Roping” on their 2023 membership application list two (2) nomination candidates and vote for two (2) national directors?

Both national roping directors are directors representing all of the roping members, so it only seemed logical and equitable that the roping members should be able to decide which two people would be representing them.

22. Why are there so many options for national roping director criteria?

The Board wanted to make sure that the national roping directors were knowledgeable and experienced in roping, especially in pro rodeo breakaway, without excluding ropers that may have been long time members.

Teton Ridge Becomes Presenting Partner for 2022 Wrangler National Finals Breakaway Roping

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (October 27, 2022) – The Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA) is excited to officially welcome Teton Ridge as the presenting partner for the 2022 Wrangler National Breakaway Roping (NFBR) at the South Point Arena & Equestrian Center, Nov. 29-30.

The NFBR returns to Las Vegas for the second consecutive year to crown a world champion. The event will begin daily at 2 p.m. PST with doors opening at 1 p.m. daily.

“We are honored and excited to bring Teton Ridge on as our presenting partner for the 2022 Wrangler National Finals Breakaway Roping,” said Jimmie Munroe, WPRA President. “Teton Ridge is passionate about celebrating female athletes in the western industry and appreciates what the WPRA (the longest standing women’s sports organization in the world) stands for. We look forward to growing this partnership and bringing new money and attention to our members.”

Currently the fastest growing event in the sport of rodeo, women’s breakaway roping has been growing steadily in professional rodeo since 2020, when the WPRA and PRCA partnered to introduce the event into more rodeos across the United States and Canada. Although the WPRA crowned its first breakaway roping world champion in 1974, it wasn’t until the 2020 NFBR that it was a featured event in conjunction with the National Finals Rodeo. Held at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas that year, Jackie Crawford was crowned the world champion. In 2021, the NFBR took place in Las Vegas at the Orleans Hotel and Casino and was won by Sawyer Gilbert.

Emphasizing the same commitment to excellence that is exhibited in all Teton Ridge integrations, the media company is dedicated to celebrating breakaway roping and to bringing new fans to the sport through its varied presence in the western culture and lifestyle.

“Celebrating the hard work that goes into becoming one of the athletes at the top levels of every rodeo discipline is a core value of Teton Ridge,” said Joe Loverro, President of Teton Ridge Sports. “We are thrilled to work with the WPRA as we honor women’s breakaway roping and the tremendous professionals competing for world titles, and to seeing the Top 5 in the final world standings after Las Vegas move onto The American Rodeo in March.”

The NFBR features the top 15 WPRA breakaway ropers based on total money won during the regular season that concluded on September 30. This year’s event will payout $250,000 during the two day, 10-round performance. The contestant with the most money won following the 10th round will be crowned the 2022 WPRA World Champion. The event will be live streamed on Wrangler Network (www.wranglernetwork.com).

Tickets are currently on sale. General admission tickets are $30 each day, with reserve admission tickets available for $45 per day. The 2022 Wrangler National Finals Breakaway Roping presented by Teton Ridge returns to Las Vegas for the second consecutive year to crown a world champion this November and tickets are now on sale. The event will be held at the South Point Arena & Equestrian Center, Nov. 29-30 at 2 p.m. PST daily.

WPRA Permit Qualifier Results

On Monday, September 12 the WPRA had a permit qualifier in Waco, Texas to determine the top 10 that would compete in the Inaugural Permit Finals event Oct. 7-9 in Waco, Texas.

The Permit Finals, hosted by the Heart O’ Texas Committee, will consist of the top 10 permit holders in their respective events. Contestants will compete in three go-rounds for a purse of more than $100,000.

To four-time world champion and ProRodeo Hall of Famer Kristie Peterson and her reigning world champion daughter Jordon Peterson Briggs on the passing of Chuck Peterson. Chuck passed away on Monday, August 29. As Jordon wrote on her Facebook page: All the animals in heaven will be getting a little extra feed from now on. Bozo will be so happy to see his caretaker.

8/15/22-Last month, RODEOHOUSTON announced their changes for their 2023 edition and we wanted to reshare in case anyone missed it. We are excited they will be featuring women’s breakaway roping in all 20 performances in 2023 up from the seven in 2022. With this new addition their purse will increase to a record $2,178,000.
 
In addition they are adding two new local qualifiers, the Fort Bend County Fair and Rodeo in Rosenberg, Texas, and the Waller County Fair & Rodeo in Hempstead, Texas, replacing the former qualifier, Sandhills Stock Show & Rodeo in Odessa, Texas. Champions in each of the approved eight events, from each respective Rodeo, will be extended an invitation to compete at RODEOHOUSTON in 2023.

7/26/2022 – WPRA President’s Letter

I have read with great disappointment the articles recently posted online by a small group made up of former directors and those who ran for office this past February. These articles are comprised of their personal opinions. Contrary to statements in the articles, the WPRA is run by its fully and fairly elected circuit directors and officers. The last election for officers and half the board was held just this spring. Based on rough vote percentages, the President was elected by 80%, Vice President by 70%, and the Texas director by 60% margins, among other elected directors. The elected officers and directors work for you, our members. 

The WPRA is run in a professional and conscientious manner in accordance with its Articles of Incorporation, Bylaws and Colorado law. Business decisions are made by the Board by majority vote, as is the case with all corporations. The process is transparent and is carefully overseen for financial control by its independent auditor who reviews finances and point audits. It is unfortunate that the WPRA recently needed to make a change as to its executive secretary, but did so in accord with its contract and without name calling or finger pointing. Mutual respect and courtesy should be the goal of all directors–current or former. I have served on many boards and in different capacities. Many times decisions were made by the majority of the board that I did not necessarily agree with. Those decisions were made by a majority of the elected board and I got behind them and supported them. That is how I believe an Association should run, where we can disagree, but get behind our fellow elected Board members and trust the decisions were made for the organization’s and member’s benefit. 

Although I was not directly involved in the lawsuit and do not have first hand knowledge, my understanding is that Jymmy Kay Cox sued the WPRA and ten directors. The Court dismissed the claims asserted by Jymmy Kay against each of the ten individual directors. These claims were reported to be filed for an improper purpose, as admitted in the online articles. The only remaining substantive claim for relief sought by Jymmy Kay was to be reinstated as Vice President of the WPRA. The court did not grant her that. The case file is a matter of public record at the El Paso County, Colorado District Court. 

Our Board is made up of ethical women with different views and perspectives. Some ideas take more time and discussion. Some of things discussed earlier this year are still under consideration. The board looks at certain subjects from different angles and it takes more time and research to reach a conclusion. All of the directors that serve on this board have one thing in common and that is they want what is best for the association and its members. I feel like it is my responsibility as president to create a respectful environment in which directors can speak freely while trying to reach a decision and to bring the board together to reach a general consensus on difficult subjects. 

In the next few weeks, the WPRA will be publishing more information about the Association and how it is improving the state of women in professional rodeo. We need and want to talk to you.

6/6/2022-The WPRA Board of Directors met Monday, June 6, 2022, to review and appoint new representatives to fill the four Board vacancies (Roping, Great Lakes, Prairie, and First Frontier).

We thank all those that were willing to step-up to fill these positions. As noted in our communication to the members directly affected by these vacancies last week, the board followed the below rule as stated in the WPRA Rulebook for filling these positions.

Rule 4.1.9 In case of any vacancy on the Board of Directors by death, resignation, disqualification, increase in number, or other cause the remaining Directors by affirmative vote of the majority thereof may elect a successor to serve until the next regular election for that position.

All vacancies (except for First Frontier), are scheduled to be part of the next regular election in 2023.

The WPRA Board is pleased to announce the following appointees:

Roping – Director Lynn Smith

Great Lakes Circuit – Director Melora Potter

Prairie Circuit – Director Cindy Gillespie

First Frontier Circuit – Lead Spokesperson Eileen Lang Kramme to assist with rodeo administration (directorship not yet determined)

5/27/2022-The WPRA Board of Directors was notified this morning (Friday, May 27, 2022) of the resignation of four directors (Great Lakes, Prairie, First Frontier and Roping) effective immediately. It is disappointing and unfortunate to have received this today.

The remaining 10 Officers and Directors will be meeting next week to formulate a concrete plan based on what is set forth in the WPRA rulebook. Upon conclusion of the meeting, we are committed to communicating the Board’s decision.

The day-to-day operations of the WPRA will continue uninterrupted by the office staff, who have been and are committed to serving your needs. In the meantime, anyone served by the four directors who resigned having a rodeo related question or concern please contact Jimmie Munroe (WPRA President) or Heidi Schmidt (Vice President).

Alert-CPRA Rodeos and Calgary Stampede Approved for 2022 Rodeo Season

3/16/2022-COLORADO SPRINGS, COLORADO – During the most recent WPRA Board of Directors meeting, held via teleconference on March 8, 2022, both the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association (CPRA) agreement and the 2022 Calgary Stampede were approved.

In an effort to return to pre-pandemic business, these decisions will now give barrel racing and breakaway roping members of the WPRA opportunities to win money and have it count toward world standings on both sides of the Border. These decisions were not taken lightly given the current border requirements but the Board took into account many aspects that included but not limited to the member survey, member input at general membership meetings held in February, ability to provide opportunities for Canadian members to compete, the long standing relationship with both entities and the overall business impact for the Association as a whole both now and in the future.

In 2021, the WPRA expanded their long standing agreement with the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association (CPRA) to include women’s breakaway roping and a handful of events were approved with more planned for 2022. The CPRA agreement is a yearly agreement and the decision to approve or not approve for the 2022 season needed to take place prior to March 31, which is the member’s due date for the first Canadian rodeo and the start of the Maple Leaf Circuit season.

The motion was made and seconded to approve the CPRA agreement for another year for both barrel racing and breakaway roping and resulted in a 9-3 vote with two individuals absent from the call when the vote was taken.

The Board then tackled the elements surrounding the 2022 Calgary Stampede. The Calgary Stampede will feature just one female event, barrel racing, like in past years and this year will once again have the reduce prize money down from $100,000 in 2019 to $50,000 to the winner in 2022. Per direction of the WPRA Board, it was requested the Calgary Stampede use similar qualification guidelines as was done in 2019 and that only $25,000 of the $50,000 would count toward WPRA World Standings.

Other items discussed regarding the Calgary Stampede prior to voting included but not limited to the challenge of making a business decision from an Association standpoint as well as giving members a choice but also being mindful of the requirement of the vaccine to cross the border to compete. It was noted that Canadian members also have to get the vaccine to enter the United States to compete and that the PRCA would once again be approving the Calgary Stampede for 2022.
The Board of Directors voted via email later in the week, upon confirmation of the aforementioned requests made by the WPRA by the Calgary Stampede, to approve or not approve Calgary for 2022. The vote ended in a 8-5 vote to approve.

Therefore, for the 2022 rodeo season both CPRA approved rodeos and the Calgary Stampede earnings will count toward world standings for any WPRA member.

2/24/2022-We are receiving notice that some members have yet to receive their physical ballots in the mail. Due to these mail issues the WPRA Board has voted to extend the deadline to return your ballot to the WPRA Auditor.

The new deadline to return your ballot to the WPRA Auditor is Thursday, March 3rd 5:00pm MT. The certification of election will follow on Friday, March 4th.

Please remember: If you have not received your physical WPRA ballot you can request a digital version by sending an email with your full name and WPRA number to ballot@wpra.com. If you receive a bounce email error message please call the WPRA office 719-447-4627 ext.6.

The new deadline to request a digital ballot is Thursday, March 3rd 10:00 am MT

2/16/2022-Election ballots were sent out to all eligible voting members last week and we are sensitive to the fact that USPS delivery times are variable.

Members must return their election ballot either by fax or mail to the WPRA auditor by 5:00pm MT on the 28th of February.

If you have not received your election ballot in the mail, you may request a digital version of your ballot by sending an email with your full name and WPRA membership number to ballot@wpra.com.

We strongly suggest members return their ballot to the WPRA Auditor by fax.
