Second World Title for Moreno Just As Sweet

The thrill of winning her first team roping heeling world title will always be special to Lorraine Moreno. But the second one comes awfully close in specialness. Perhaps this time around, Moreno knows even more how difficult the feat is and everything it took to get there.

“You work so hard every year to try and win a title,” she said. “So really, this is just as good as the first. You put hard work in so that feels great.”

Moreno was quick to note that she couldn’t have achieved her dream for a second time without the help of fantastic team roping partners, or without her parents and God for support. She roped most of the year with Cassidy Boggs, Kayelen Helton, Kenna Francis and Beverly Robbins.

Moreno, of Mathis, Texas, said there was no magic formula to winning this year’s title, except to aim for consistency and let the cards fall.

“I honestly didn’t win a bunch of first place – but I placed a lot, and that’s what really helped me,” she said. “Being consistent and trying to place. I kept up, hitting there and there and I think it showed at the end of the year. I didn’t run away with it, and I still had to work hard at the Finals to make sure I didn’t give away the title to someone else. I think the thing that kept me in it all year was just placing at a lot of rodeos.”

Moreno finished the year with $13,604, edging out Kelsie Domer who finished with $10,056. Moreno had a small lead going into the WPRA World Finals and solidified her victory roping with Helton. The pair finished in 30.1 seconds on three head for the weekend.

At the Finals, Moreno was riding Uno, a 10-year-old that she’s had for about three years. She said they’ve really clicked and he’s her main horse just about anywhere they go.

“He can do anything. Fast, slow, slow steers that are hard to heel – he can just kind of do it all. You can go from a bad setup steer to a haul butt down the arena steer and he can do it,” she said. “He has a really good personality, and he’s spoiled rotten!”

Looking to the 2025 season, Moreno said she has the same game plan in mind, to aim for consistency and then see how things shake out.

“I look forward to just roping every chance I get, and keep going,” she said simply. “I don’t really think about the Finals until it’s time. Just keep roping and keep my head up. If I win, I win. If I get a victory at a roping, that’s awesome, but otherwise keep placing and being consistent for my partners and hopefully it’ll be just as good at the end of the year again.”
